Levi's 501 Jeans

Trends come and go… And then they sometimes come back again. Basically, every time this happens, I kick myself. Because I literally JUST decided to donate my old straight jeans from the late 90’s. I remember thinking, ‘these will never come back in style. And if they do, I’m not wearing them.’ Ya. Well, they’re back and I’m wearing them.

To be honest, the trend isn’t the most flattering. They’re high waist, which means unless your waist is the smallest part of your body, they squeeze. They squeeze real tight. And there’s no stretch! I mean, I thought we were past jeans with no stretch? Although I also thought we were past the possibility of going through a global pandemic, so guess I’m wrong again. They’re a light wash, which we all know tends to add pounds, instead of the lovely dark wash which hides a few L-B’s. They are loose around the leg, all the way down, then fall well above your ankles, which is NOT practical for winter.

Knowing all of this before I bought a pair, I researched how much a pair of straight leg Levi’s 501 Jeans would put me back, because I wasn’t sure I wanted to invest much money into a pair of jeans I’m probably going to hate. Well, the Levi’s website is selling them for $50+. When I say plus (+), the darker washes (which aren’t in-style) are $50 and the more trendy light washes are, plus. Of course they are. Why wouldn’t Levi’s capitalize on their best seller coming back into trend?

I just wasn’t willing to pay that for a test-run. So, with further research, I discovered that Walmart sells Levi’s. WHAT? I didn’t know that. AND, they have 501 variations. Like mid-rise (thank you, Jesus), with stretch! So, I grabbed the wash I wanted, in my true size, did a little dance and the results are… They’re okay.

I mean, I’m still having a hard time with the cropped look. Normally cropped would be my dream come true, because It’s virtually impossible to find denim long enough for my legs, but even with high socks and combat boots, my ankles were cold. And even with a little stretch and the midrise, the loose fit on the legs became more and more baggy as the day went on. And not in a good way.

So, lesson learned. Almost everything comes back in style at some point. Even the styles that you never thought would. This particular trend took 25 years to come back, so unless you are a hoarder, just get rid of them and re-buy. Also, don’t invest a lot of money in something that your heart tells you isn’t going to work for your particular body-type. I’m so glad I got my low commitment Levi’s 501 Jeans from Walmart.
