Spring Trend: Denim Report

Ha ha. The look on my face in this picture is basically how I feel about denim trends, right now. I tell people, “wear what fits your body”! That’s my mantra. Well, I’m here to tell you I still want you to wear what fits your body, just make sure it’s not a skinny jean. I really didn’t think we’d get here. Where I actually acknowledge that something that has been trending for a majority of my life is now completely out of style. Don’t get rid of your skinnies, just pack then away. Everything comes back around at some point.

But if we’re talking about what to wear this spring in the denim world, it’s basically any style OTHER than skinny jeans. I was encouraging ladies to keep one pair out to wear with tall boots, but that season is over. Now, it’s all wide leg, light wash, oversized, distressed and even (gulp) low rise. I’m know. I’m cringing too.

Not that I completely hate the look, it’s just that my legs are my favorite part of my body. So to cover up my long, skinny legs with a silhouette that is the opposite of what looks best on me, sucks. It just sucks. I dress people for a living. I HAVE to be in the latest trends when I’m working with Clients. My wardrobe is a reflection of my work and if I’m off-trend, I’m not doing my job.

The solution… Straight leg. I can handle that. I need them still high-rise to conceal the muffin top and I need some stretch so I can breathe, but I can live with a little volume. The straight leg does offer some balance to a layered top. We’re not all walking around looking like an inverted triangle. A straight leg also pairs well with almost any type of shoe. Flats, heels, boots, sandals. Which means you can dress them up or down. One thing about a straight leg right now, is that length can completely vary. Cropped? Cute. Dragging on the ground? You’re going to destroy the hem, but cute. Hits the ankle? Ideal.

There’s also my absolute favorite style of denim, which is flare. Those are in style, too. They almost give you the skinny, until it hits the knee, then flares out. On someone like me, with long-slender legs, a flare is perfect. Again, it offers balance to a looser top… BUT flares do not work on everyone. Have short legs? Avoid flares. An apple? Avoid. An inverted triangle? Avoid. A pear? Maybe. You just have to try them on and see.

Although I do believe that this oversized denim trend will end as quickly as it came into our lives, it is having a moment. I do recommend putting away the skinnies and getting yourself one pair of looser fitting denim. Starting with a straight leg is the best way to transition. Find you like the looser fit? Go all the way to a wide leg. They’re kinda everything right now. Just be sure to balance your looser fitting denim with a more fitted top or base layer.

My black leather moto is BAR II (Macy’s), my red lace top is Free People, my straight denim are Pull & Bear and my black Mary Jane flats are from DSW.
