It's Skirt Season

As I’m writing this, I’m listening to the weather and it’s supposed to snow tomorrow. UGGGGHHHHHHH!! I literally put my snow boots away yesterday. It’s all my fault. I have lived in Maine long enough to know that snow can come until May. There’s even scientific evidence that it’s snowed in June before. MAINE.

All good. Just means Skirt Season has been pushed back a couple weeks. Skirt Season? Yea, officially announcing it. If you’re going to want to know about one major trend this spring, it’s skirts. No one is more excited than I. Being 85% legs, skirts are my jam. I remember in high school, one of the parents complained that my field hockey kilt was too short. I quickly explained that all our kilts are school issued and the same length… Mine just appears shorter because I have the world’s longest femurs. Optical illusion, if you will.

The good news is, although mini skirts are all the rage, all skirt lengths and styles are a go. Like a pleated school girl skirt? It’s in. Want to pull out your old Amercrombie denim mini? Go for it. Like a sleek satin midi? Try one with a little slit for more range of motion. Like a gypsy style lace maxi? Buy it. The bubble hem bringing you back to the 90’s? I can’t believe I’m saying this, but yup, totally trending.

Of course there are rules to wearing skirts. Maybe not so much rules, as styling suggestions. First off, if your skirt is a mini, have some coverage. A lot of minis are coming with built-in shorts. We call that a skort. I call it smart. If your mini doesn’t have shorts underneath, be sure to wear full coverage undies. Keep it classy, ladies. Also, when it comes to minis, that’s enough skin for one look. Avoid showing your belly or chest. A soft tee paired with a denim mini is timeless. If your skirt has some volume, like ruffles, bubble, tulle, keep your top slim fitting to achieve balance. A voluminous bottom paired with volume on top will just swallow your shape.

Another styling tip to consider is your footwear. This is a matter of balance, as well. My denim mini with lace ruffle is pretty short, so to add some coverage, I opted for knee high cowgirl boots. Offers me some coverage, while still showing off my legs. A pair of sneakers will always take the dressiness of a skirt down a notch, so don’t hesitate to run errands in that satin midi and graphic tee. And of course, a heel will always elongate your leg, so if your knee length skirt is cutting you off in the wrong spot, consider adding some height.

My look above: Denim Jacket (from Macy’s ages ago), floral top is Free People, denim mini is Madden Girl and my white cowgirl boots are from Amazon.
