It's Been a Weird Fall

It’s been a weird Fall. No way around it. Starting with a huge delay in foliage, everything going on in Israel and the horrific events in Lewiston, Maine. Not to mention that it was 80 degrees yesterday and in the 50’s today. It’s been difficult to get into the swing of Fall.

With that said, I think I can officially tell my Maine people that it’s okay to put away your summer pieces and transition to warmer, Fall pieces. I prematurely did this and have been crawling in and out of my crawlspace day in and day out, digging back out shorts, tanks, boots. Like I said, it’s been a weird Fall.

Pulling unseasonable pieces from your wardrobe to store, is the absolute best way to streamline your closet from season to season. I do it (at a minimum), four times a year. Still have sandals, flowy floral dresses and tanks in your closet? Time to put them away, so they aren’t a distraction. This will create more space for pieces that are more seasonably appropriate.

I always recommend clear, plastic bins for storage. I get mine at Target and they are only $7 a piece. Why clear, you ask? Because there’s going to be a time (or a whole bunch of times) that you are going to want to pull a piece out and the clear bins allow you to see exactly what is stored inside. Saves time and headaches. I also like to categorize my bins. For example, I have bins labeled, “Summer Tops”, “Summer Bottoms”, “Summer Dresses”, “Swimwear”, etc. Yes, I have too much clothes, but at least they’re organized!

Now that you have eliminated all the items in your closet that you currently aren’t wearing, let’s bring out what you should be wearing for Fall. The key to successful dressing in the Fall is layering. Mornings and evenings are cold, but days can get warm. Be prepared with layers. My look above is a great example of a “base layer”. My green pants are from Amazon (Love Tree). They are a contemporary style and offer the comfort I need to be active all day. My cropped long sleeve cream top is Madewell. The hat is so old, I can’t remember where it’s from, sorry. Layering a lightweight puffer jacket, a fleece zip up or even a boho vest will add the perfect element of interest and warmth.

Again, it’s been a weird Fall. If you haven’t gotten to transitioning your wardrobe, it’s okay. Take time to put yourself first. Heal, love and put those darn flip flops away!
